Appalachian Music Teachers Association Est. 1972

Our Mission

To promote professional and social relations between members; to provide programs, discussions, and activities of interest to private music teachers, college and university faculty, and others interested in music teaching; to raise the standards of music teaching, performance, and appreciation among teachers, institutions, and the general public in upper East Tennessee; and to encourage greater respect for the music teaching profession.

Our History

The Appalachian Music Teachers Association was founded in 1972 as a local affiliate of the Tennessee Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association.

What We Do

AMTA serves its members and the broader community through:

  • Monthly programs — conferences, masterclasses, and recitals featuring respected scholars and performers.
  • Annual student auditions — adjudicated performances at ETSU each spring, leading to the Honors Recital and TMTA State Competitions.
  • Professional fellowship — bringing teachers together for shared learning and support.
  • Affiliation with TMTA and MTNA — connecting our members and students to a national network.
